Stop at Mirepoix, a beautifull medieval village, the earliest mention of the place dates to the 10th century.
On the large central square you can admire the half-timbered houses supported on wood pillars, creating a magnificent covered arcade. Then we will drive to the Château de Montségur, about 1hr30 hiking go and back. Here I will tell you about the dramatic story of the Crusade against the Cathars. This tragedie occurs in the 12th century.
Next stop is at the Puivert Castle, it is certainly one of the best preserved. It is also one of the most interesting monuments of the fourteenth century. With its 35 meter high dungeon in which four splendid rooms are superimposed, its six towers of defese, this fortress dominates the ancient glacial lake of Puivert. Its recently restored keeps offers a view of the plain of Quercob to the north, the west with Montségur in the peaks of the Pyrenees and the east with the peak of Bugarach. It is privately owned, but open to the public and undergoing restoration.
Then we will go to Rennes-le-Château, it is a small village perched on a hilltop near Couiza. It has become world famous in the last few years following the publication of a series of books dealing with a mystery concerning a nineteenth century priest who lived in the village. At the heart of the mystery is the fact that the priest (abbé Bérenger Saunière) suddenly become immensely rich during the 1880s…
