Discover the Lastours Castles, breathtaking vue from the belvédère, then hike the vallée to discover those vestiges one by one…The Châteaux de Lastours (in Occitan Lastors) are four so-called Cathar castles in the French commune of Lastours in the départment of l’Aude. The four castles are on a rocky spur above the village of Lastours, isolated by the deep valleys of the Orbiel and Grésilhou rivers.

After a 15-minute climbing along the exposed hillside, you will climb  inside each of the four stark castles of Lastours, which lie about 100 yards apart and have been rebuilt and restored. You will make your way up spiral stone staircases and peered through ancient arrow slits and ceiling gaps — nicknamed murder holes — through which defenders dropped rocks and poured boiling water.

The site has been classified “monument historique” (historic monument) by the French Ministry of Culture since 1905 and archaeological digs are still in progress.

These four castles constitute a single entity, even though they are not a single structure.  The construction of each is different reflecting the range of alterations made to the castles.

Eight hundred years ago, these castles in Languedoc, a region of vineyards and olive groves that stretches from the Mediterranean to the Pyrenees in the southwest corner of France,  were hideouts of the Cathars, a zealous religious sect that denounced many basic tenets of the Catholic Church.

Pope Innocent III was alarmed by the Cathars’ growing popularity, so in 1208 he declared a crusade to eradicate them.

Enjoy a delightful and convivial moment.

Good walking shoes, and good physical condition is requested for the hiking. The Belvédère is accessible for everybody.
